Can I Appeal my Illinois Bar Exam Score?
We have been asked this question a lot this week, especially given that February 2018 Illinois bar exam results were just released.
The short answer is, unfortunately, you cannot appeal your Illinois bar exam results. The Illinois Board of Admissions released this scoring memo which states that “Bar examination results are final and non-appealable. The Board of Admissions does not entertain requests for review, regrading, or other relief.” The Board does automatically regrade all scores between a 262 and 265 prior to results being released. The Heidemann Law Firm is thrilled to have written 10 of the 11 bar exam appeals that passed in the State of Michigan for the July 2017 Michigan bar exam administration. 486 students passed pre-appeal and 497 passed after appeals. The passage rate for the July 2017 Michigan bar exam is 73%.

The Michigan Board of Law Examiners’ only passed seven Michigan bar exam appeals in the State of Michigan for the February 2017 administration.
We are thrilled to have written five of those appeals. Of the passing appeals that we wrote, three clients passed needing only one point on appeal. One passed needing two points. One passed needing three points.

Which states allow bar exam appeals? It is not clear the number of states that truly allow bar exam appeals. Many state websites are unclear or not updated. Further, some states have changed their bar exam appeals policy after adopting the UBE or changing their bar exam. However, based on the state bar examiner’s websites, we are able to see that the following states allow bar exam appeals. (Note: This is not legal advice. Please look up your jurisdiction’s rules in-depth if you are considering a bar exam appeal. Further, if your state is not listed below but they offer a post-results appeals process of some kind, please let us know in the comments below!)

For the July 2015 administration, ten people passed on appeal and we wrote five of the appeals.
How do we know that ten people passed on appeal? Because the pre-appeals pass number released by the Michigan Board of Law Examiners was 493. How Long Does It Take to Receive Michigan Bar Exam Appeal Results?
There are no guidelines given by the Michigan Board of Law Examiners as to when you will receive Michigan bar exam appeal results (except for the fact that you will find out prior to sitting for the next bar exam!) However, historically letters have been sent to applicants approximately three weeks after bar exam appeals are due. Many people have been contacting us and asking us if it is worth it to appeal their bar exam scores. Many clients are very curious about their prospects of passing the Michigan bar exam on appeal. We wrote a post about this last administration but given the high influx of calls, we figured it would be worth it to quickly update the post for this time.
A big factor in making the decision to appeal is to figure out how many points you need to pass the Michigan bar exam on appeal. Since the Board of Law Examiner’s uses an undisclosed scoring method, it is difficult to discern based on scores alone. We found a better way to accurately determine what you need.
